Flutist
David has enjoyed playing music for over 60 years. From 1961 to 1962 he took Classical Trumpet Lessons with Alois Hruby former principle Trumpet for the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, in Cleveland, Ohio. A little later, from 1966 to 1968 he played Trumpet in the Midwood High School Symphony Orchestra, and was the principle Trumpet from 1967-1968, in Brooklyn, New York.
In the 1968 and 1969 football seasons he played trumpet in the Harvard University marching band in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Then, from 1972 to 1973 he learned how to play the Bamboo Flute on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Gualala, California. In 1974 he returned to Cambridge and took Classical flute lessons at Harvard University. After his college graduation, from 1975-1976 he played flute in a folk trio, “Berkshire Green” in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In 1979 he took Classical Saxophone lessons at the University of Kentucky, Lexington and from 1979 to 1980 he played flute in “Lizarbo” a 7-piece Brazilian jazz band that played Happy hours every Friday at the Jefferson Davis Inn. Then, from 1981 to 1982 he studied Jazz Flute in a class with David Baker at Indiana University, Bloomington. In July, 1982 he got married to his wife Pepper and they moved to Charleston, South Carolina where they have lived ever since. From 1999 to 2000 he took jazz saxophone lessons with Robert Lewis, head of the jazz program at the College of Charleston, and then took jazz saxophone lessons with John Slate, (a former student of Stanley Turrentine, former sax player for Ray Charles and Manhattan Transfer, and former sax professor at Cornell University) from 2002 to 2006. |
From 2007 to 2008 he played sax and flute for “Mental Note” a 4-piece rock band, and played at the Music Farm and at Awendaw Green. Starting in 2015 he has been a flute player in Jazz duos with various guitarists including Chad Bond, Bryan Motte, Danny Slye, Philip Jackson, Lance Ard, and Grace McNally, in the Charleston area. During 2019 he also played in a classical flute trio, “Harbor Breeze”.
During Covid, in 2021, David played flute under the stage name “Dr. Got2Play” remotely on an Album “Different Worlds” containing 15 all original songs of various genres, some by him and some by Jasper Meyers “The Jazz Master” who also played several other instruments and produced the album in Chicago, Illinois. (available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Sound Cloud, etc.)
