Percussion, Marimba, and Steel Drums

Dr. Nicholas V. Holland, III (Nick) is the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Charleston Southern University and is currently serving as Chair of Instrumental Programs in the Horton School of Music at Charleston Southern University (CSU).
At CSU, he directs the Pride of the Lowcountry marching band and the 6th Man Band basketball pep band, and he is musical director and conductor of the CSU Symphonic Band, assistant conductor of the CSU Wind Ensemble and the South Carolina Youth Wind Symphony. He teaches courses in Conducting, Music Appreciation, and Music Technology. He holds BM and MM degrees in music education from East Carolina University and the PhD in music education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His research on noise exposure in collegiate bands has been published in UPDATE: Applications for Research in Music Education, and his articles on percussion pedagogy and instrumental music education have been published in Teaching Music, Percussive Notes, and Keynotes online magazine. Nick conducted the premier of Ruth, a one-act opera composed by Dr. Richard Pressley. He presented research on noise exposures in athletic bands at the CBDNA Southern Division conference and the Georgia Music Educators Association annual conference. |
Additionally, he presented sessions in percussion pedagogy from a conductor’s perspective at the Texas Music Educators Association and the South Carolina Music Educators Association annual conventions. In 2020 Dr. Holland received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association for ‘an outstanding contribution to bands and band music.’ His conducting has been heralded as ‘incredibly expressive’, ‘a wealth of talent’, and ‘fantastic’.
Nick served on the staff of the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band in 2012 and 2013 as the piccolo/clarinet instructor, and served as the Lead Director for the band in 2014 and 2015. He marched with the 1985 Bridgemen from Bayonne, NJ and the Sky Ryders from Hutchinson, KS from 1986-1988, reaching finals each year and placing 10th in the individual marimba competition. Additionally, he instructed the front ensemble for the Sky Ryders in 1989. He is an active percussionist and performs frequently with orchestras, community bands, and praise bands including the North Charleston Pops! Orchestra, the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Wind Symphony, The Charleston Bach Society, The Charleston Men’s Chorus, the Charlestowne Brass, and the Singers of Summerville.
Nick has been playing steel drums since 1988, and is featured on three recordings of Panama Steel from Greenville, NC. He's directed his own steel bands including Panablaze in Valdosta GA and Pangea in Greensboro, NC. He's performed at the Beaufort Music Festival (NC), the Richmond Arts Festival (VA), and opened for Jimmy Buffett at the Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC (all with Panama Steel). He enjoys performing for weddings, receptions, parties, and festivals.
He resides in Mount Pleasant, SC with his wife Karen, their children Nicholas and Caroline, and their Boston Terrier Clementine.
